A Room in the West End

A Room in the West End is a 60-seater Scottish bistro located in the basement beneath Teuchters Bar.

The small but versatile menus at both lunch and dinner are changed regularly with the emphasis always on fresh and locally-sourced produce.

There are plenty wines by the glass and bottle or, if you prefer, you can bring your own for a small corkage fee.

The full drinks list from upstairs at Teuchters is also available: beer, gin, rum, lots of soft drinks and of course the sizeable whisky collection…

It’s a fixture for rugby fans en route to Murrayfield, but below the popular Teuchtars bar lies its restaurant A Room in the West End, promising a modern spin on traditional Scottish favourites, writes Nick Mitchell Traditional grub and locally-sourced ingredients are the restaurant industry flavour of the moment, so it’s not difficult to happen upon a vintage-style gastropub in Edinburgh’s city centre.

Book-ending a string of boutiques, cake shops and bars in Edinburgh’s quaint West End village, the restaurant’s adjoining pub, Teuchters, is a prime spot for rugby goers, who regularly spill out onto William Street before heading on to Murrayfield.

Opened in 2001 by highlanders (and ‘teuchters’) Peter Knight and John Tindal, as we are reliably informed in the ‘oor history’ section of their website, A Room in the West End and Teuchters are the older siblings to A Room in the Town, which closed last year, and A Room in Leith and Teuchters’ Landing, which opened in 2008.

At first glance the menu is similarly traditional – cullen skink, haggis, neeps and tatties and pan seared Scottish chicken breast don’t do much to push the boundaries.

My partner chooses the pan seared Scottish chicken breast, smoked ham hock and Lockerbie cheddar tattie cake with pickled red onions and a cider cream sauce.

More pubby than its Leith counterpart, A Room in the West End has been serving up Scottish favourites in the relaxed, intimate, wood-panelled basement of Teuchters bar since 2001.

Starters include a thick and hearty Cullen skink or slithers of cured Rannoch beef served up alongside crumbly black pudding and a soft-boiled egg.

Desserts continue the homely comfort theme with a sticky toffee pudding and a selection of ices.

The wine list, too, is plentiful with affordable choices alongside a couple of more lavish offerings.

It’s a safe and reliable bet for a wallet-friendly lunch or dinner but maybe it's time to shake things up and tempt some of those in the busy bar above to head downstairs.
